The CWC South Bay Writers Branch, a nonprofit entity, was chartered in January of 1987 by a handful of local writers. It has since grown into an enthusiastic group of more than 200 from all parts of the greater San Jose area. Members include novelists, poets, memoirists, nonfiction authors, script writers and journalists, as well as others just launching their writing vocation; seeking growth for their skills and encouragement for their progress.
Our primary purpose is providing education for members and our public in the craft and the business of writing; publication opportunities for completed work; and a helpful network of the interested. To that end, we schedule in experts in writing, editing, marketing, and publishing to speak at monthly meetings, educational workshops, and our far-reaching biennial writers conference.
The South Bay Branch is one of nineteen branches of the California Writers Club – in existence since 1909. Over the years the CWC has been favored with early stalwarts such as Jack London, John Muir, Ina Coolbrith, and Joaquin Miller. Today our State, with its inclusive character, rich often raucous history, and varied and marvelous climates, provides homes for many if not most of contemporary authors in the country. The CWC, well associated, boast over 1200 members.
Our future looks bright. Fresh ideas and energy colonize our leadership as new members join in. We find ourselves in the center of an art ambiance, here in the Santa Clara Valley, anchored by three major universities and a host of other educational offerings – all with progressive creative curriculums. Additionally our Bay Area is steeped in diversity – the southern end with its rich and plentiful share. Our writers are drawn from these traditions and reflect in their work, in their interfaces and thinking a fresh and inspiring approach. We believe it gives us an edge, as we attempt to do well with it.
Our regular monthly dinner meetings are held at the Lookout Bar & Grill in Sunnyvale, CA. In general, we meet the second Tuesday of every month at 6 PM. However, some months we have a workshop or other special event instead of the regular meeting. Information will be posted on this website and in our newsletter, WritersTalk.
Non-members are always welcome. We advertise our meetings to encourage the public to attend and we try to make everyone feel at home. For more information about our schedule of meetings and directions, go to our Meetings page.
South Bay Writers host several Open Mic Nights in the South Bay area. Writers who would like to read their own prose or poetry, or short selections from a favorite author, should reserve a time slot. See the Open Mic page for details. Non-members are more than welcome to join the fun.
