Writers' Guidelines for WritersTalk

Send queries or submissions to newsletter@southbaywriters.com.

Submission Format

  • Text or MS Word attachment
  • Suggested lengths listed are not absolute. Query the editor.
  • Original from-the-camera photos preferred. If you do crop for subject, do not reduce the resulting image. Identify all people by name and position.
  • If you have any questions, ask first.

News Items (400 words) Anything related to the Club or to writing that you think has a "newsworthy" ring; for example:

  • Speaker recap
  • Meetings—Committees, Critique Groups, Reading Forums
  • Book introductions or sales of new manuscripts (including self-publishing)
  • Awards and commendations
  • Special speakers at scheduled events; for example, Yan Martel at the Commonwealth Club

Anything Goes—Almost  (300 words)

Guest column: you may expound on anything.  This is your space intended for your creativity; an essay, a treatise, a philosophical wandering, a conversation with Homer or Kerouac, a letter to your ancestors—a copy of a piece of your mind.

In My Opinion…  (200 words)

Letters to the editor: how you feel about WritersTalk, our meeting place, our leadership or speakers, our club focus, barrel gravy on your meatballs. This is the place to be heard—so to speak.

Literary Pieces (2000 words)

Your short fiction, poetry, essays, and humor may be published in WritersTalk and we encourage you to submit.  Published on a space-available basis.

Announcements and Ads

Anyone may place an announcement or ad in the newsletter; it must have vocational/avocational value to members of the club. Announcements that do not provide economic value to the originator are free.

Advertising is announcements that are intended to provide economic benefit to the originator. Cost to Club members is $7 per column inch; non-members, $10.  We will assist or insist with regard to layout.
