Writers Helping Writers
Some are born with pen to paper and fingertips to keyboard; others unfold to inspiration’s latent spark. South Bay Writers is composed of published and aspiring writers who gather together to inspire and inform each other on our path to producing the best writing in our chosen genre.
Chartered in 1987 by a small group of wordsmiths, South Bay Writers is the Silicon Valley branch of the 117-year-old non-profit California Writers Club. Today, our branch includes over 100 members from every major literary genre as well as editors, booksellers, and others in related fields. Our mission is to inspire, support, and educate members in their writing and publishing, and our programs demonstrate this commitment.
The club’s heritage dates to the early years of the 20th century, when California author, journalist, and social activist Jack London and his literary peers gathered at the Oakland hills home of poet Joaquin Miller. The Alameda Press Club, led by California poet laureate Ina Coolbrith, held nearby meetings at the Shattuck Hotel in Berkeley. In 1909, after various mergers and spin-offs, these informal literary salons became the California Writers Club.
Today, California Writers Club comprises 20 branches throughout the state with over 2000 members—reaching from Silicon Valley to the High Desert and from redwood forests to Orange County beaches.
South Bay Writers hosts in-person and virtual activities to educate, inform, and inspire. We welcome you to join us!
